Cheriton Planning and Zoning now under Northampton County

Planning and zoning and building applications in the town of Cheriton will now be submitted to Northampton County following the Memorandum of Understanding established at the Northampton Board of Supervisors work session on June 24th, 2025.

Cheriton will also have to update their Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Code to comply with Virginia building codes as part of the agreement.

Charles Kolokowski, County Administrator, emphasized that the memorandum was establishing what had already been requested by Cheriton.

“The town of Cheriton has requested that the County assumes responsibility providing various services besides planning and zoning, also requesting the County Planning Commission to act as the planning commission in Cheriton and also taking over building code responsibility for the town of Cheriton,” he said. “This is a formalization of the arrangement with the town of Cheriton detailing responsibilities for the town and responsibilities and services provided from the County to Cheriton.”

Cheriton joins Eastville and Nassawadox in having a similar agreement with Northampton County for planning and zoning.
