The Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT) is alerting motorists to a recent surge in fraudulent text messages impersonating toll road agencies and financial institutions. Known as “smishing,” these deceptive messages are sent to mobile phones, posing as legitimate toll authorities and requesting urgent personal or payment information in an attempt to defraud individuals.
The CBBT urges customers to exercise caution when receiving unexpected text messages from unknown numbers and to avoid clicking on any suspicious links. To help protect motorists from fraud, the CBBT provides the following safety tips:
- Do not click on any links included in unsolicited text messages.
- Verify E-ZPass account details directly by calling Virginia E-ZPass at (877) 762-7824.
- Never share personal information. If a fraudulent link has been clicked and information was shared, take immediate steps to secure financial accounts and personal data.
- Report suspicious activity by filing a complaint with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov. Include details such as the phone number from which the text originated and any website links provided in the message.
- Delete the text message to prevent accidental engagement.
For those needing assistance, E-ZPass Customer Service Representatives are available at the CBBT Administration Building, Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
