Call for Artists: Eastern Shore Tourism Commission seeks design concepts for new LOVE sign

The Eastern Shore of Virginia Tourism Commission, in partnership with the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel (CBBT), is inviting the public to submit design proposals for a new LOVEwork sign to be installed at the Eastern Shore of Virginia Welcome Center.

The new sign will be located just north of the Welcome Center at 32383 Lankford Highway in Cape Charles, welcoming visitors arriving from the CBBT at the southern entrance to the Shore.

Local artists, students, community members, and art programs are encouraged to submit original concepts that capture the essence of the Eastern Shore — including its landscapes, cultural heritage, and strong sense of community.

“This is a chance for the community to help shape a landmark that greets every visitor coming onto the Shore,” said Robert Sabbatini, Executive Director of the Eastern Shore Tourism Commission. “We’re looking for designs that truly represent who we are as a region — and we’re excited to celebrate the talented artists who call this place home.”

Megan Lawson, Director of Destination Development for the Tourism Commission, added: “Virginia LOVEwork signs are exciting and iconic public art pieces and have become destinations in their own right. This location is the perfect spot for our fifth LOVE sign — a chance to showcase everything the Shore has to offer and create a lasting display of local creativity and community pride.”

The new sign will join existing LOVEworks installations in Cape Charles, Onancock, Parksley, and Chincoteague as part of Virginia’s statewide “LOVEworks” tourism campaign.

Submission Guidelines:

Artwork must reflect the spirit of the Eastern Shore
Any medium is accepted (e.g., sketches, digital art, paintings), but submissions must be submitted digitally
All designs should be suitable for permanent, public display
Final design may be adapted to accommodate materials, scale, and installation needs

Deadline: July 31, 2025
