Broadwater Academy will begin having a school resource officer in the not too distant future. In the budget amendments at Tuesday night’s Board of Supervisors meeting Northampton County Finance Director John Chandler presented a stated request for $24,839 to fund the officer’s position. However, Broadwater Academy would reimburse the Northampton County Sheriff’s Department for the 9 months school is in session. Reimbursements would cover all costs associated with the officer. During summer months when school is not in session, the Northampton Sheriff’s Office will cover the position’s expenses.
Sheriff David Doughty called it very good arrangement because the Sheriff’s office has much more demand during the summer months and would benefit from the extra officer. The total actual cost to Northampton County would be approximately $5,000 annually.
Supervisor Robert Duer requested the county require a three year commitment before entering into the agreement with Broadwater Academy. The motion passed on a 4-0 vote with Supervisor Oliver Bennett abstaining.
