Bond was denied Thursday in Accomack Circuit Court for a Hallwood man accused of seven 2023 felony charges involving the theft of $360,000 worth of copper wire and possession of methamphetamine.
Judge Lynwood W. Lewis Jr. said 35-year-old Dennis Roger Gray Jr., of Main Street, was a “flight risk and a danger to himself.” The judge called his drug addiction profound. Lewis also considered Gray’s past failure to appear in court and the large amount of restitution involved in the case.
Gray said he has been in jail for eight months, has taken classes for recovery while in jail, plans on getting help from CSB, connected with a jail pastor, will take any opportunity to better himself, and would wear an ankle monitor if required. Defense lawyer Carl Bundick asked for an unsecured bond so Gray could work, see his children, and pay his rent.
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Michael Baker opposed the bond. The prosecutor said he plans to introduce DNA evidence that Gray committed crimes at a Corner Mart store and at two farming operations. Baker said the defendant was on probation at the time the crimes occurred.
