Boil Water Advisory remains in effect for Onancock

The Town of Onancock’s Boil Water Advisory remains in effect as officials continue to ensure the safety of the town’s water system following the recent major leak under the Ames Street bridge.

According to Town Manager Matt Spuck, daily tests for chlorine, pH, and calcium carbonate at the water tower have returned normal results since the leak was repaired. These tests, conducted both at the tower and at various locations throughout town, are part of routine quality assurance. On Monday, officials expanded testing to all five remote sites, with results consistent with historical data.

Despite these positive indicators, the Department of Clean Drinking Water requires additional bacterial (BacT) testing to confirm the system’s safety. Spuck personally delivered the first sample to a lab in Salisbury, the nearest certified facility, and was informed that two consecutive tests must be conducted 16 hours apart. The next sample will be delivered Wednesday morning.

“We are following every guideline and regulation to ensure everyone’s safety, even though the risk is low,” said Spuck.

Residents are advised to continue boiling water for at least one minute before consuming it, including for drinking, cooking, and brushing teeth, until further notice.
