Residents of Accomack and Northampton counties are being urged to use caution Monday morning as dangerously cold temperatures increase the risk of black ice across the Eastern Shore.
According to weather officials with the National Weather Service, temperatures dropped well below freezing overnight, allowing moisture on roadways to freeze. As a result, black ice is possible, creating slick and slippery driving conditions—especially on untreated roads, secondary routes, bridges, and back roads.
Motorists are advised to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert for icy patches that may not be visible, particularly during the early morning hours. Pedestrians are also encouraged to take care when walking outdoors, as sidewalks, stairs, and driveways may become icy and increase the risk of slips and falls.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Monday morning as temperatures rise above freezing, allowing ice to melt. Until then, residents are encouraged to allow extra travel time and exercise caution while driving or walking.
