A rescued Bald Eagle, known as #24-3548, is set to return to the wild after two months of dedicated treatment and care. The public is invited to join the release event on Thursday, October 31, at 1:00 p.m. at the Mutton Hunk Fen Natural Area Preserve.
The adult eagle was discovered on August 27, 2024, near the Tyson Plant in Accomack County. Found grounded and unable to fly, the bird was reported to have dirty, crusted feathers. Wildlife rehabilitator Gay Frazee successfully captured the eagle and brought it to the Center for treatment.
Upon examination, the Center’s veterinary team found no injuries, but the eagle’s feather condition was severely compromised. Over the next two weeks, the team provided fluids and supportive care, while also administering daily medication for anxiety due to the bird’s stress.
By mid-September, the eagle’s feathers had improved enough for it to be moved to an outdoor flight pen, where flight conditioning began. Though the eagle flew strongly, it initially lacked the stamina required for survival in the wild. The rehabilitation team conducted daily exercise sessions to help the bird regain its strength. By October 25, the eagle was cleared for release.
The release event will begin with a presentation by Wildlife Center President Meg, who will discuss the Center’s vital work with Bald Eagles, followed by the opening of the crate to release the eagle.
The event is free and open to the public, and attendees are encouraged to RSVP with their names and party sizes via the provided webform.
