Closures have been announced on Assateague Island as Hurricane Erin approaches.

Effective immediately, the Oversand Vehicle Areas in both Maryland and Virginia are closed due to flooding and beach erosion. All oceanside beaches, including the Assateague Island State Park Beach, are closed to in-water activities because of dangerous rip currents and anticipated high surf.

At Chincoteague Beach, parking lot access is partially restricted, with the potential for a full closure as conditions worsen. Officials noted that additional closures may occur in the coming days, as forecasts indicate the potential for increased wind speeds, tidal surge, and high tide cycles.

Visitors are urged to check the National Park Service website at www.nps.gov/asis or follow Assateague National Seashore and Assateague State Park social media pages for updates. General information is also available by calling 410-641-1441.
