The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Accomack and Northampton Counties, in effect from Friday evening through Saturday afternoon.

The forecast predicts heavy mixed precipitation, with snow expected Friday night into Saturday morning before transitioning to rain. A widespread 2 to 3 inches of snow is likely along with a band of more significant accumulations of 4 to 6 inches is possible.

Snowfall is expected to begin late Friday evening in lower Northampton and move northward into northern Northampton and Accomack early Saturday morning. Snowfall rates will increase quickly as snow spreads east.

Residents are urged to plan for slippery road conditions and exercise caution while traveling.

Following the snowfall, temperatures plummet once again into the teens and low 20s Saturday night with highs Sunday in the mid to upper 30s. Lows in the teens again Sunday night. Melting and refreezing is expected into early next week.
