The Virginia State Police are investigating another pedestrian fatality on the Eastern Shore.
Monday evening, August 19, 2024, at approximately 9:56 PM, state police were called to investigate a fatal crash at Route 13, south of the Route 175 intersection in Oak Hall.
Preliminary investigations reveal that the driver of a 2004 Toyota Prius was traveling northbound on Route 13 through a controlled intersection, when the driver struck a pedestrian walking in the left lane of travel. The pedestrian, 53 year-old Thomas Leandreas Wharton, of Mappsville, Virginia, died upon impact. The driver of the Prius, 36 year-old Judea Amenda Van Smith of Cambridge, Maryland, was transported to Salisbury Regional Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
There is no indication that speed was a contributing factor, and it is unknown at this time if alcohol played a factor into the crash.
No charges were made at the scene, but the investigation is ongoing and being reviewed by the Commonwealth Attorney.
Notification has been made to family members.
