Agreement reached to preserve public access at Weir Point while protecting habitat

Over the past several weeks, I’ve had productive conversations with Director Matt Wells of the Department of Conservation and Recreation regarding public access to Weir Point and the Parker’s Marsh State Natural Area Preserve. I’m pleased to report that we have reached a reasonable agreement that will allow continued public enjoyment of this special place while prioritizing its long-term conservation.

I want to thank Director Wells for his willingness to work together on a balanced approach. We both recognize the importance of preserving this fragile environment. As such, the public will continue to be allowed to visit Weir Point, consistent with past activities, with a few important adjustments.

First and foremost, no overnight or after-dark activity will be permitted. Director Wells was clear on this point, and I support his position. I ask all visitors to respect this policy. Failure to do so could risk future access or potential closure.

Secondly, I respectfully ask all beachgoers to remain below the full moon high tide line while visiting. This simple guideline provides ample space for recreation while protecting sensitive habitats that exist further inland.

I’ve assured Director Wells that our local community understands the importance of preserving Weir Point and will continue to respect and protect this treasured natural resource. Responsible stewardship by visitors will help ensure continued public access for years to come.
