The Onancock Bayside Revitalization Project is moving ahead, slowly but steadily.
At the February Board of Supervisors meeting, Onancock’s Bayside Revitalization (OBR), a 501c3 tax exempt organization, was awarded a $150,000 grant by the County for removal of up to 22 derelict structures in the Onancock Bayside community.
The project manager, Mr. Khalid Alvi provided the Board with the following update.
Eight of those structures have already been selected for fire department training burns.
So far, title searches have been completed for several properties, asbestos testing is underway, and three demolition firms have submitted bids. But challenges remain: local title backlogs, absentee property owners, and a limited pool of licensed demolition crews are causing delays.
To date, about $4,500 has been spent—mostly on title work—leaving just under $4,000 for the next phase.
Project leaders hope to begin demolition by late summer, once permissions and permits are in place.
