The Accomack County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers pose as deputies and claim citizens have missed jury duty. According to Sheriff W. Todd Wessells, the scammers tell victims they are in contempt of court and must pay fines immediately to avoid arrest.
Authorities stress that under no circumstances will the Sheriff’s Office demand payment of fines over the phone.
This is the latest example of scams targeting local citizens, which can cost victims thousands of dollars. Officials urge residents never to send money to someone they do not know without first verifying the situation. Sheriff Wessells recommends asking for details such as the caller’s name, badge number, phone number, company, and supervisor—and independently confirming that information. If a caller refuses to provide it, uses threats, or pressures you to act immediately, hang up and contact law enforcement.
