The Accomack County School Board is considering rolling out new safety measures starting this fall. The Board discussed the proposal at their meeting Tuesday night. The Board plans to consider the proposals in the future after receiving more input. If passed the new rules would require all students must use completely clear backpacks—solid color or colored-clear bags won’t be allowed.
According to a school official, the purpose would be to streamline the existing security process. Schools require students to go through a metal detector each morning often meaning that hundreds of students are coming through the line. When an alarm occurs, this would enable security to quickly scan the backpack to determine the cause.
Students would also no longer be allowed to bring metal or hard plastic drink containers. Only clear disposable water bottles—sealed or empty would l be permitted. The proposal would also implement a program to provide clear back packs for students unable to provide their own.
