Accomack School Board honors six students for National competition success

The Accomack County School Board recognized six students Tuesday night for earning national honors at Beta Club and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America competitions.

Three students placed nationally at the National Beta Convention in Nashville, Tenn.

Kaitlyn Phillips of Nandua High School placed 10th in Senior Beta Language Arts. Samely Roblero Perez of Nandua Middle School placed fourth in Junior Beta Spanish, while Maite Morente placed ninth in Elementary Beta Spanish.

Three additional students earned national recognition at the FCCLA competition in Washington, D.C.

Vivian Letherbury and Addison Spivey of Nandua High School placed eighth in the Level 3 Food Innovations competition. Archer Johnson earned a silver medal in Level 3 Hospitality, Tourism and Recreation.

National Beta Club is an academic honor society for students in grades four through 12 that promotes achievement, character, leadership and service. Members participate in academic competitions, leadership programs, community service projects and national conventions.

FCCLA is a national career and technical student organization for students enrolled in Family and Consumer Sciences programs. The organization helps students build leadership skills and prepare for careers in areas including food innovation, hospitality, tourism, education and community service.

School Board members and others attending the meeting praised the students for their hard work and for representing Accomack County Public Schools on the national stage.

School officials said the achievements demonstrate the strength of the division’s academic and career and technical education programs while providing inspiration for other students.
