Officials in Accomack County, the Town of Chincoteague, and Northampton County have each declared a local State of Emergency ahead the arrival of tonight’s winter storm.
According to emergency officials, the winter weather is expected to move into the region on Saturday, January 24, and continue through Monday, January 25. Forecasts call for a mix of snow, sleet, and other winter precipitation, with total accumulations of 3 to 8 inches possible. Temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing through the upcoming week, increasing the likelihood of hazardous road conditions and lingering impacts.
Officials warn that travel conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly and are asking residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary. Emergency managers are also requesting that 911 only be used for true emergencies, allowing first responders to prioritize the most critical calls during the storm.
In advance of the weather system, residents are encouraged to prepare for potential power outages and limited access to stores by assembling an emergency supply kit. Recommended items include bottled water—one gallon per person per day for at least three days—nonperishable food, blankets or sleeping bags, a first aid kit, necessary medications, toiletries, and a non-electric can opener. Officials also advise residents to plan for the needs of infants, elderly or disabled family members, and pets, and to have a battery-operated radio available for updates. Those with landlines are encouraged to keep a corded telephone on hand.
Emergency management officials say additional updates will be provided as conditions evolve and are urging residents to monitor local alerts and forecasts closely throughout the weekend.
