Accomack County officials are seeking guidance from federal legislators on how to best advocate for the reinstatement of lifeguard services at Assateague Island, following the federal government’s decision to eliminate them this year. County Administrator Mike Mason has also been in discussion with the Chincoteague Town Manager, and other possible solutions are being explored. Details on these alternatives will be shared once they are fully evaluated.
At the meeting Mason said that he had contacted Federal Officials to require if the town and the county could fund lifeguards hired by the government and was told that due to the federal hiring freeze that would not be possible. Another option is for the town and county solicit bids from organizations that provide lifeguard services. Mason said this option might be more doable.
During Wednesday night’s Board of Supervisors meeting, Mason was also directed to draft a letter to federal representatives. The letter will urge opposition to federal budget cuts that could harm NASA Wallops Flight Facility, which plays a vital role in the county’s economy and the well-being of its residents.
Mason said that the proposed budget has not been finalized so it remains to be seen what the effects will be. But he said that it would be prudent for the board to share their concerns with our federal representatives before the final vote and reconciliation process begins.
