Eastern Shore localities declare immediate suspension of outdoor burning due to dry conditions

Due to extreme dry conditions and elevated winds, Accomack County, Northampton County, and the Town of Chincoteague have enacted a temporary burn ban to reduce the risk of wildfires. Authorities are urging residents to be vigilant as the current conditions make fires more likely.

In addition to prohibiting open burning, local officials are providing several fire prevention tips to help mitigate the risks:

• Never discard cigarette butts or cigars on the ground or from a vehicle—this is both dangerous and illegal.
• Adjust trailer chains to prevent dragging on the pavement, which can create sparks while driving.
• Refrain from burning anything in barrels during this time.
• Ensure that lawnmowers and farm equipment have properly functioning spark arresters.
• Exercise caution when using lawnmowers to mulch leaves, as hot bearings and exhaust can easily ignite nearby dry materials.
• Keep flammable items such as firewood, dry landscaping plants, compost piles, and brush piles a safe distance away from structures.
• Notify your electric company if dead trees or overhanging limbs pose a threat to power lines.
