The Accomack County Airport is due for a major upgrading. An FAA Grant Agreement is expected in early September for the Runway 3/21 and Runway Lighting Rehabilitation project. The grant will provide funding for the construction phase of the project that has a 120-day contract period. Total project costs are $4,240,000. The FAA will provide 90% funding at $3,816,000; the Virginia Department of Aviation will provide 8% with a grant for $339,200; and the local share at 2% is $84,800.
Upon completion, the 5,000-ft x 100-ft runway will have up to a four inch asphalt overlay depending on grade corrections, new runway markings as well as LED pilot-controlled runway lights, LED Precision Approach Path Indicator and LED Runway End Identifier Lights.
The Board of Supervisors voted to accept the grants at Wednesday night’s meeting. They also voted to reduce the rent charged for the hangers at the airport by 10% during the construction period. The Board also voted to award the project to Branscome Construction.
