The Accomack County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a rezoning request that will turn the former clam processing plant in Mappsville into an aerospace manufacturing facility.
The request was made by the Virginia Spaceport Authority, seeking to change the property’s zoning from agricultural to industrial.
The Planning Commission previously held a public hearing on the proposal, where no objections were raised. Commissioners voted unanimously to recommend approval.
Under the agreement, the Spaceport Authority will limit the site’s use to the creation and assembly of space-related equipment.
The Board of Supervisors also held a public hearing Wednesday night, and again, there was no opposition from the public.
The rezoning clears the way for the long-vacant building to reopen, bringing new career opportunities to local residents and supporting the growing aerospace industry connected to the Wallops Flight Facility.
