Accomack County Registrar

The Accomack County Board of Supervisors approved a new registrars office that will be located at Sawmill Park.  Accomack Registrar Patty White compiled a brief for the Board that explained why the current office located in the Accomack County Courthouse  is insufficient in light of the new Election rules mandated by the State of Virginia.  Beginning with the November 2020 Presidential election,  absentee votes can be cast in advance without an excuse.  This is tantamount to early voting.   According to County Administrator Mike Mason,  the new office will have enough space to handle the increased traffic due to the new rules,  have easy handicapped access and restroom facilities for the public.  The new facility will re-purpose the space that was used by Parks and Rec prior to the completion of their new office.

Supervisor Renita Major said that she wants the public to understand that several options among county owned buildings were explored but the Sawmill Park location was the best among those options.

Accomack County residents will now be able to vote in advance without having to explain why for any reason.

The renovation of the building for the new office will cost the county $240,288 which was put out for bids earlier. Jim Wert Construction was the low bidder. Even though the project wasn’t included in the 2019-20 budget, higher than anticipated revenue receipts make it possible to fund the construction immediately.
