Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred just after noon Monday on Route 13 near Parks Road, between Accomac and Parksley. The accident happened at approximately 12:20 p.m. and involved a southbound 2018 Subaru Impreza that crossed the median and struck a northbound 2014 Toyota Sienna minivan head-on.
The impact killed 42-year-old Gina Alvarez Dela Cruz of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, who was a front-seat passenger in the minivan. She was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries and later succumbed. Seven other people in the Toyota, including the driver, 43-year-old Leobert Samon Dela Cruz, were injured. The female driver of the Subaru also sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. Three individuals were airlifted for emergency care.
The collision prompted a complete shutdown of both north and southbound lanes on Route 13 in the area. Traffic diverted onto Route 316 (Greenbush Road) and Parksley Road created significant backups. Southbound traffic was reported to be backed up for nearly two miles, from the former Parksley Livestock location through Parksley and Greenbush, before easing south of the detour route.
State police say the investigation is ongoing and more details will be released once next of kin are notified.
