Despite the ongoing federal government shutdown, the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague Island National Seashore will remain accessible to the public during normal operating hours.
Refuge officials confirmed that gates will stay open, allowing visitors continued access to all trails and the beach. However, facilities that require staffing will be closed. This includes the Herbert H. Bateman Educational and Administrative Center, Tom’s Cove Visitor Center, and the historic Assateague Lighthouse.
The decision means that visitors to Chincoteague Island can still enjoy outdoor recreation, including hiking, birdwatching, and beach activities, though they should plan ahead for limited services.
The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, one of the most visited refuges in the country, typically attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. Local officials note that keeping the gates open will help minimize disruptions for both residents and tourists during the shutdown period.
