A prolonged heat wave is set to grip the Eastern Shore of Virginia and much of the Mid-Atlantic early next week, with temperatures forecast to climb into the 90s for several consecutive days. Meteorologists warn this could be the hottest stretch of the year so far, accompanied by oppressive humidity and little nighttime relief.

Beginning today, a heat dome building over the Central U.S. will push eastward, bringing widespread high temperatures and extreme heat index conditions to the region. On the Eastern Shore, the combination of intense sunshine, high humidity, and limited overnight cooling will pose health risks—particularly for those without access to air conditioning. Overnight lows may only fall into the 70s.

The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Heat Advisory from 10 a.m. today through 10 a.m. Tuesday, and an Excessive Heat Watch from Tuesday morning through Wednesday evening. During the advisory, heat index values are expected to reach 106 degrees. The watch period could bring heat index values of 107 or higher.

Residents are urged to stay indoors during peak afternoon hours, remain hydrated, and avoid strenuous activity. Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat events. Drink plenty of fluids, seek air conditioning when possible, and check on elderly relatives and neighbors.

While thunderstorm activity is expected to be minimal during this event, isolated storms may occur along the northern edge of the heat dome in areas like upstate New York and New England. However, most of the Mid-Atlantic — including the Eastern Shore — is likely to remain hot and dry.

Pet owners are reminded to provide animals with shade and water and to avoid walking them on hot pavement. Swimmers should also be aware that some local waterways may remain cooler than expected despite the air temperature.

Relief may not arrive until late next week when showers and thunderstorms move in from the west and south. However, the Eastern Shore could remain in a dry pocket, delaying any significant cooldown.
