Voter turnout remained low in both Northampton and Accomack counties during the Democratic primary elections

Voter turnout was notably low in both Northampton and Accomack counties during Virginia’s recent Democratic primary elections. In Northampton County, only 7% of registered voters participated. In the race for Lieutenant Governor, Aaron Rouse received the most support with 360 votes (53%), followed by Richmond Mayor Lavar Stoney with 122 votes (18%), with the remaining votes split among other candidates. Jay Jones led the Attorney General race in the county with 410 votes (60%) compared to 279 votes (40%) for Shannon Taylor.

In Accomack County, voter participation was even lower, with just 4% of voters casting ballots—totaling 1,135. Rouse again led the Lieutenant Governor race with 542 votes (49%), while Stoney followed with 193 votes (17%). In the Attorney General race, Jones and Taylor were both reported to have received 538 votes, although conflicting percentage totals—52% for Jones and 48% for Taylor—suggest a possible tabulation or reporting error.

Statewide, Jay Jones, a former delegate from Norfolk, won the Democratic nomination for Attorney General, defeating Henrico Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor. Jones will advance to the November general election to face Republican incumbent Jason Miyares. The contest marks a rematch between Jones and Miyares, who previously defeated him in the 2021 general election.

In the crowded Democratic field for Lieutenant Governor, State Senator Ghazala Hashmi emerged as the projected nominee, narrowly defeating both Rouse and Stoney in a tight race. Hashmi’s win positions her for a high-profile role in the general election this fall as Democrats aim to regain statewide executive offices. Despite low turnout on the Eastern Shore, the local results reflected broader trends seen across the state.
