According to Accomack County Administrator Mike Mason, NASA is taking steps to protect critical space infrastructure from the growing threats of storms and rising seas. Officials at Wallops Island say a new environmental assessment is underway to explore a potential shoreline restoration project.
The plan could involve dredging sand from an offshore shoal to replenish the island’s beach, constructing offshore breakwaters, and repairing the existing seawall.
The effort is part of NASA’s broader Shoreline Protection Program, aimed at safeguarding key assets on Wallops Island, including those belonging to the U.S. Navy and the Virginia Spaceport Authority’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport.
This move builds on earlier work. Back in 2010, NASA released a long-term environmental impact statement outlining a 50-year strategy that included initial construction and future maintenance cycles. The new assessment is expected to build on that foundation, using updated monitoring and adaptive management techniques.
For now, NASA continues to evaluate the environmental implications of each proposed measure as part of the ongoing planning process.
