An Atlantic man who pulled out a box cutter and slashed another county resident on the neck and head at the Stuckey’s store in Mappsville in October 2023, was sentenced to 18 years of active time in prison Thursday in Accomack Circuit Court.
Forty-three-year-old Corbin Kenji Drummond, of Smith Road, pleaded guilty to the aggravated malicious wounding of Danny Rasmussen III in April.
Judge Lynwood W. Lewis Jr. gave Drummond 30 years with 12 years suspended. He said the term was based on his violent criminal history and a presentence report that “shows absolutely no remorse.”
Commonwealth’s Attorney Spencer Morgan said Drummond is “not amendable to rehabilitation.” The prosecutor quoted the defendant saying, “I wish I could have walked away, but he got what he deserved … The rage got inside me.”
Morgan said the incident was captured on video with audio inside the store. In that recording, the defendant said, “I got something for you,” just before he wielded the box cutter. “He proved himself a violent person and a threat to the community,” Morgan said.
The prosecutor also said store workers and others who witnessed the crime were adversely affected.
It was reported that Rasmussen needs continuous treatment for his injuries.
Morgan asked for the mid-point of the guidelines at 20 years. Defense lawyer Carl Bundick asked that 20 years be suspended down to 11 years of active time. A hush fell over the courtroom when the term was pronounced.
