Relay Invitation

Relay for Life kick off event

The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Nandua will kick off its 2024 fundraising season at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at the Parksley firehouse, 18431 Dunne Avenue.

In May 1985, Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Wash., raising money to help the American Cancer Society with the nation’s biggest health concern: cancer. Friends, family, and patients watched and supported him as he walked and ran more than 83.6 miles and raised $27,000 through pledges to help save lives from cancer. As he circled the track, he envisioned having teams participate in an event. After previously battling stomach cancer, Klatt passed away in 2014, but his legacy lives on as a global fundraising phenomenon.

Relay for Life is more than a walk – it’s a chance to come together in your local community to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against every cancer. The Luminaria Ceremony is a signature element of every Relay for Life event. At nightfall, homemade paper lanterns are lit in honor and memory of lives touched by cancer.

The theme of this year’s kickoff is “Cheer for a Cure.” Don your favorite team gear and earn coveted spirit points before you even sign up to relay.
