Chincoteague Island Library Hosts Book Signing and Fire Safety Talk with Author Nicholette Steffes

The Chincoteague Island Library is proud to welcome retired firefighter/paramedic captain and author Nicholette Steffes for an evening of storytelling and fire safety education on Thursday, October 9, 2025, at 6:00 PM.

Steffes, author of the memoir series The Ghosts of Route 13, will share real-life stories from her time serving with the Accomack County Department of Public Safety. Her books offer a look at life on the front lines of emergency response along Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the author, hear behind-the-scenes insights from her writing, and purchase signed copies of her work.

In addition to the book signing, Steffes will present a community talk in recognition of the National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home!” focuses on safe practices for using rechargeable devices such as e-bikes, cell phones, laptops, and power tools.

“As someone who has lived through the realities of fire and emergency response, I know how important prevention is,” said Steffes. “I’m honored to combine my passion for writing with the opportunity to educate the community about fire safety.”

There will be discussion of The Ghosts of Route 13, a talk on this year’s fire safety theme, and a Q&A session with the author. Copies of the book will be available for purchase on-site. This event is free and open to the public.
