Amherst senior and Eastern Shore native Michael Riopel had a banner weekend.

The Amherst Mammoths entered Friday evening’s contest against their rival Williams ranked 5th in the NESCAC conference and a bubble team for the NCAA Division III tournament. Michael Riopel led Amherst with 19 points, also grabbed 8 rebounds and the Mammoths emerged victorious over the Ephs 72-57.

On Saturday, Amherst hosted the nationally 5th ranked Middlebury for their Senior Day. Once again, Riopel led Amherst with 17 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. The Mammoths were victorious on Riopel’s Senior Day 80-68. The win was also Amherst Coach’s Hixon’s 800th.

The two wins against top ranked teams ended up clinching the regular season championship for the Mammoths. For his efforts, Riopel was named the NESCAC men’s basketball player of the week.
