According to Sheriff David L. Doughty, Jr. , Maria D. Owens was relieved of her duties as correctional officer on November 1, 2017. Allegations against Owens were received by Sheriff Doughty who promptly had the matter investigated. The investigation revealed evidence of improper sexual conduct with a male inmate on separate occasions. Currently Owens has been charged with Carnal Knowledge of an Inmate and Illegal Conveyance of a Cellular Telephone to an incarcerated Prisoner. Due to the criminal aspect of the investigation, no additional details are being released at this time. Sheriff Doughty stated that further information will be made available at a later date.

Owens had been assigned to work at the Eastern Shore Regional Jail as a correctional officer. She had been employed with the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office since 2004.

Additionally, Jodecii Purnell, 25 of Westover, Maryland was charged with possessing a cellular telephone while incarcerated without authorization.

Sheriff Doughty further stated, “I’m proud of my staff and where we are as a department. However, this type of activity is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. “
