Newport News Woman To Serve 12 Days on Reckless Driving and Child Endangerment Charges

Kenya Crusoe of Newport News was in Accomack County Circuit Court on Tuesday facing both a reckless driving and child endangerment charge. When Crusoe’s case was called, Commonwealth’s Attorney Spencer Morgan announced that there was a plea agreement which reduced the child endangerment charge to child neglect in exchange for a guilty plea to both child neglect and reckless driving. Morgan told the court that on April 3 Officer Gladding in the Parksley area observed the defendant driving in excess of 80 mph, and that her speed at one point exceeded 100 miles an hour with her then slowing to approximately 70 in a 45 miles an hour before he was able to make the stop. Once stopped, Gladding reported that he observed a 6 year old child in a woman’s lap in the passenger front seat with no seat-belt restraint on the child. Crusoe, testified that she had no criminal record of any type and was on her way from New York to her home in Newport News with 2 cousins and the mother of the child in the automobile when passing through Accomack County. Judge Lewis accepted the plea agreement but explained to the defendant that she was accountable because she was the captain of the ship. Lewis then sentenced the defendant on the child neglect charge to 3 months with all suspended but 6 days, on...

If Yankees Win, Webb Gets A Ring

While the only two feelings Eastern Shoremen have for the New York Yankees are love or hate, there is a small reason why you might want to be pulling for the Bronx Bombers this postseason. Eastern Shore native Tyler Webb will get whatever ring corresponds with the the Yankees’ ultimate level of success. Webb spent 23 days on the New York Yankees’ roster this season, meaning if they are to win the World Series and/or the American League Championship Series, he would join Slim Churn and Bobby Brown and as the only native Eastern Shoremen to have championship rings...

Two Sentenced in Stolen Credit Card Case

On Monday in Northampton County Circuit Court Kajuan Walker and his codefendant Carl Stackhouse both from Rockaway, New York were facing the sentencing from their credit card spree in Virginia Beach that occurred earlier this year. Both defendants pled guilty on April 10, 2017. Stackhouse faced 10 counts including possession of tax cigarettes over the limit and giving false ID to police. Walker faced 24 counts of credit card theft and 3 counts of possession of a document for the purpose of establishing a false identity. Commonwealth’s Attorney Beverly Leatherbury told the court that when the defendants stopped at the Chesapeake Bay toll booth the attendant smelled marijuana and that the car was subsequently searched leading to their arrest. Officers found 42 credit cards and 119 cartons of cigarettes. Leathurbury said that only 14 banks responded with information suitable to prosecute. Leatherbury stated that Stackhouse while out on bond committed similar offenses in Maryland and Williamsburg Virginia. Based on the banks that responded she requested restitution at $11,641.77. In Walker’s case, he was facing 24 counts of credit card theft and 3 counts of possession of a false ID with one additional count for the cigarette possession. The cases were individually heard. Judge Lewis sentenced Stackhouse to 5 years on each of 10 counts with all but 6 months on each count suspended totaling 60 months for his involvement...

Riverside Shore Memorial Unveils New Digital Plaque Display

ONANCOCK, Va. – The Eastern Shore community has had a century-long record of supporting local health care, dating from the first hospital Auxilians who raised money for the bricks and windows needed to build the very first Shore hospital which opened in 1928. The newest hospital to serve the Shore is now located in Onancock, and it is designed to enhance healing through natural colors and natural light. The new hospital is nearly 20% larger in square footage than the Nassawadox building, but the banks of windows mean that there is limited wall space. On a large wall in the new hospital lobby, Riverside planned an innovative and elegant digital donor display to recognize community members who have generously supported the hospital in the past. Donors who were honored or memorialized on plaques on doors and in hallways in the Nassawadox hospital are now featured on the digital display. “The digital display gives us the opportunity in the future to expand on the story of these visionary individuals,” said John Peterman, Vice President and Administrator at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital. “We cherish the rich history that brought us from the 1910s to today. Three successive hospital buildings and a large integrated health network have been possible because our community supports us. Not a day goes by that we don’t remember that.” Because the plaques are now documented digitally, the...

State Police Investigating Loss of Hallwood Town Records

According to a story on the Virginia State Police is investigating a car fire near Hallwood which burned all of the books for the Town of Hallwood. Police and units from the Bloxom Fire Company responded on Saturday October 7. When they arrived they found a car belonging to Angela Taylor, the Hallwood Town Clerk, ablaze. In the car were all of the towns financial records. Before the fire, Taylor had been ordered to submit the books for an audit after several years of not having one. According to the story, Taylor said she loaded the books in the car to take them to Oak Hall for the audit but they never made it. Gone are years of records involving delinquent tax information, information on the towns finances. Hallwood Mayor Jackie Poulson said that all that was left at the town office was a box of papers, none of which had any value. Following the fire, Taylor submitted her resignation in writing to Poulson. Poulson is busy obtaining financial records from the town’s bank and other sources to try to reconstruct as many lost records as possible. Taylor has not been charged but the State Police are investigating the entire...
