At Tuesday night’s supervisors’ meeting of the Northampton County Board of Supervisors, the annual election of officers showed a lot of unhappiness and friction. When County Administrator Charles Kolakowski conducted the election for a new chairman, Robert Duer turned to Oliver Bennett and told him that he was going to keep his word and nominated Bennett for the 2018 chairmanship. Northam to Bring a Piece of the Eastern Shore to Inauguration

Governor-elect Ralph Northam plans to include something from the Eastern Shore at his inauguration celebration.  The event will feature wine from Chatham Vineyards in Northampton County.  The winery packed up a truckload of their products and delivered them to Richmond earlier this week. Northam will be the first native Eastern Shoreman to occupy the Governor’s office since Governor Henry Wise, who was governor from 1856 until 1860.  Wise then served as an assistant to General Robert E. RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – The Virginia General Assembly is set to kick off its 2018 session. Lawmakers will officially convene at noon Wednesday, and a host of new faces will fill the House of Delegates, where Democrats picked up 15 seats in the November elections. Northam Priorities Curbing Gun Violence and Medicaid Expansion

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- Democratic Virginia Gov.-elect Ralph Northam says curbing gun violence and expanding Medicaid will be two of his top legislative priorities after he takes office Saturday. Northam spoke with outgoing Gov. Terry McAuliffe at a press conference Tuesday, one day before the start of the General Assembly session. The two laid out a joint legislative package. Teams from across the state moved into Eastern Virginia last week to address a one in a decade snow storm.   Heavy snow and winds as high as 60 mph created drifts which made some back roads completely impassable for several days after the storm. Coast Guard and National Guard Help Tangier

Both the National Guard and the Coast Guard helped the residents of Tangier Island over the weekend. The island had been isolated by ice for over a week. Members of the Sandston unit of the National Guard delivered food and medicine by helicopter to the island. At the same time, a Coast Guard icebreaker from Baltimore was able to break up the ice and allow access by boat. Another frigid night along with hazardous travel conditions can be expected for the Eastern Shore of Virginia through the Monday morning commute. Arctic high pressure remains centered over eastern North Carolina tonight. The combination of a mostly clear sky, light winds and the snow cover will allow for maximum cooling conditions. Virginia State Police continue to respond to disabled and crashed vehicles in those regions most impacted by the storm. Fortunately, many people heeded the warnings to avoid traveling overnight so calls for service were moderate. Snow has subsided throughout area, but temperatures are expected to remain below the freezing mark overnight and Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will continue to plow and treat roadways that are expected to refreeze as result of falling temperatures.
