Provisional Ballot Count Could Give House of Delegates to Democrats

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — Election officials in Virginia will be counting provisional ballots from last week’s election. The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the provisional ballot count starts Monday and could determine which political party controls the House of Delegates. For instance, the count could affect the outcome in the 94th District. Republican Del. David E. Yancey of Newport News is holding onto a 13-vote lead over Democrat Shelly Simonds. Coast Guard Medevacs Man Off Cape Charles

PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard medevaced a man who was experiencing chest pain Saturday, from a container ship approximately 80 miles off Cape Charles. The crew of the container ship Norwegian Breakaway contacted watchstanders at the Fifth District Command Center in Portsmouth at approximately 12:40 p.m., stating a 26-year-old male was experiencing chest pain aboard the ship. An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew launched from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and hoisted the man and the ship’s nurse. Virginia Expecting Record Yield for Soybeans

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced that the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released the November Crop Production report today, showing that Virginia is on track for a record yield for soybeans, and increased yields for corn and peanuts from October. Cotton is holding steady, with forecast production still up 90 percent from 2016. “Yield forecasts improved when compared with a month ago,” said Herman Ellison, Virginia state statistician. “Prospects for corn, soybeans and peanuts all increased based on Nov. 1, conditions. Horntown Man Pleads Guilty to Tyson Bomb Threat

By Wesley Edwards Patrick Corey of Horntown pled guilty in Accomack County Circuit Court on Thursday charges of making a bomb threat at the local Tysons food processing plant, and disorderly conduct with property destruction. A separate charge was created back in May when the defendant failed to show for his trial. A Capias was issued and he was arrested in Norfolk. Chincoteague Man Sentenced for Burglary and Grand Larceny

By Wesley Edwards Daniel Newman of Chincoteague was in Accomack County Circuit Court on Monday to be sentenced for burglary and grand larceny which occurred in May of 2016. Carly Hat, a friend and neighbor, was the victim and testified on Monday that Newman stole more than $20,000 worth of her lifetime collection of jewelry and that she was only reimbursed by insurance for $7000 and received any additional $1,000 from the defendant as his part of the restitution. Mrs. Katherine Birch Hickman

Mrs. Katherine Birch Hickman, 97, wife of the late Louie Wilgus Hickman, of Melfa, VA, passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at Heritage Hall Healthcare, in Nassawadox, VA. Born December 13, 1919 in Chester, PA, she was a daughter of the late Moe Birch and Lorraine Birch.  Mrs. Hickman was a loving and caring wife and mother, who proudly devoted her life to providing a nurturing, Christian home for her family.  She was a longtime member of Hollies Baptist Church, a self-taught pianist, loved dancing and acting, and enjoyed riding motorcycles with her husband, Louie.  Katherine will be fondly remembered for her pure heart and immeasurable kindness, which was felt by all who knew her. Survivors include two children, Randy Hickman and wife Ann of Melfa, and Diana Kay Annunziata of Newburg, MD; eleven grandchildren, Brad, David, and Stephen Hickman, Tommy and Kenny Mundell, Steven David, Dean Hickman, Jr., Stacie Arnold, Beth Price, Andrea Wilson, and Michelle Teasley; and several great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.  In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by her son, Louie Dean “Deany” Hickman; and sister, Moretta Carruthers. Funeral services will be conducted from the chapel of the Williams-Onancock Funeral Home on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 2:00 p.m., with The Reverend Jack D. The sale of Riverside Shore Rehabilitation Center has been finalized. According to Riverside Communications Director Peter Glagola, Riverside Health System and Smith Packett finalized the Purchase and Sale Agreement for Riverside Shore Rehabilitation Center.
