Exmore Man Pleads Guilty to Cocaine Distribution

By Wesley Edwards Rovonte Rogers of Exmore was in Northampton County Circuit Court on Monday facing charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. The Northampton grand jury indicted Rogers on July 10, 2017 on a charge that occurred January 4, 2017. The Commonwealth’s attorney Beverly Leatherbury told the court that Rogers made a $50 purchase from a confidential informant on Walker Lane in Exmore Virginia on January 4. Judge Lewis accepted the defendant’s guilty plea continuing the case for sentencing with defense attorney Singleton then asking judge Lewis for the defendant to remain on bond, which judge Lewis denied telling the defense and the defendant that the defendant was facing 6 to 8 months at sentencing and “it might as well start today” therefore he was denying the request to remain on bond. Northampton Board Chair Expresses Frustration Over Appointment of Broadband Authority Members

By Wesley Edwards At Tuesday’s Northampton Board of Supervisors meeting,  Chairman Spencer Murray went on the record stating that he had written to the Accomack County Board of Supervisors about the appointments to the Broadband Authority, which is made up of both county administrators and 3 private citizens. Murray explained that the appointments of the citizens have expired and the two counties could not agree on who should be making the multimillion-dollar expenditure decisions and that he could not even get a response from Accomack County. Murray explained that he felt, as the board did, that broadband service is vital to Northampton County citizens both for economic development purposes meaning jobs and tax base and medical service with the moving of the hospital from Northampton County. Murray reminded everyone including the public present at the meeting on Tuesday night that the two counties own the broadband service and therefore have an obligation to appoint the most qualified people to be making the multimillion-dollar decisions with which broadband is now...

Northampton Supervisors Deny After the Fact Permit for ANEC Communication Tower

By Wesley Edwards On October 10, 2017 at the Northampton County Board of Supervisors meeting it became public knowledge that A&N Electric had built a 180 ft communications tower in Northampton County without the required special use permit. At that meeting Northampton County agreed to process an after the fact request for that permit. Tuesday night it was reported that the planning commission had unanimously denied the special use permit stating that Mr. Jeff Walker’s existing airplane runway would be unusable if they allowed the 180ft communications tower to remain in place. Mr. Butch Williamson President and CEO of A&N Electric appeared at the Tuesday night meeting asking for the tower to be approved in order to continue the upgraded service to Northampton County. Kelvin Pettit of A&N told the supervisors that they had built the tower on co-op property under advice from their counsel that they were exempt, but once that ruling changed they immediately applied to Northampton for the special use permit.  Pettit told the supervisors that the County could not grant clear airspace to a private airport such as Mr. Jeff Walker’s. Walker told the supervisors that he has a letter that states the tower is in the most advantageous spot but the letter did not say it was the only spot for the tower. Walker explained to the supervisors that his runway has been in...

Virginia is a top beneficiary of the Federal Historic Tax Credit, which aims to revitalize historic buildings. And Virginia has one of the highest percentages of tax filers in the country who claim state and local tax deductions. Virginia...
