Shore Roads Much Improved

Although it is possible that some refreezing occurred overnight, Eastern Shore roads are in good shape. Accomack County has joined the many localities on the coast who are opposed to President Trump opening up the Virginia Coast to offshore drilling. Accomack Supervisors Discuss Library Memorandum of Understanding

The Accomack County Board of Supervisors discussed at length a draft memorandum of understanding with the Library Board of Trustees concerning the $2 million county contribution to the new library.   Much of the discussion revolved around the disposition of the current library building in Accomac.   Supervisor Harris Phillips recommended that the county allow the library to retain the old building to sell it either on the market or to the county. Supervisors Vote to Split Onley VFD Money Among All Accomack Fire Companies

The Accomack County Board of Supervisors voted to distribute the money that originally went to the Onley Fire company equally among the other fire companies in the county. According to County Administrator Mike Mason, Onley received $120,000 per year from the county.   That amount, divided among the other fire companies would come out to approximately $9000 per company. War of Words Between Accomack and Northampton Chairmen Continues

The war of words between Accomack and Northampton Boards of Supervisors Chairmen continues. Accomack County Board Chairman Robert Crockett responded to a letter to the editor published in the Eastern Shore Post by Northampton Chairman Spenser Murray. Crockett read a three page letter that questioned Murray’s criticism of the Broadband Authority. Crockett said Murray questioned the by-laws of the Authority in regards to the appointment process of it’s members, quoting Murray‘s question “what fools wrote these bylaws?” Crockett stated that after researching the issue he found that the contract setting up the Broadband Authority was passed unanimously by both...

Accomack Supervisors Again Discuss Chicken Houses

The subject of chicken houses was brought up again during the public session at Wednesday’s Accomack County Board of Supervisors meeting.   Mr. Glen Saman of Painter told the board that he is concerned with water use by poultry houses. Saman warned that there is a limited amount of water available and if the large poultry farms use all the permitted water, we would run out.   Saman asked the Board to work with the State to require monitoring of chicken house water consumption. According to  a story on WRIC-TV, Virginia House Democrats spent Tuesday pushing a group of bills they say will support working Virginians. “Working Virginians need more protections now more than ever,” said Democratic Caucus Chair Charniele Herring. “We have seen the middle class in this country erode as now it is harder to make ends meet.” Herring said the “bold set of reforms” have all be introduced in other sessions. ANEC Warns Larger Electric Bills On the Way Due to Cold Conditions

A&N Electric Cooperative (ANEC) is reporting higher-than-normal energy usage throughout the service area for the first week of 2018. Since the holiday break, subfreezing temperatures have lingered for days and are expected throughout the month of January. This will force cooperative members to use more electricity to heat their homes and businesses. RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- A Virginia state Senate panel has defeated a Democratic push for stricter gun laws. A Republican-led panel voted Monday to block legislation that would allow cities and counties to ban firearms at certain public events. Bill to Increase Felony Minimum to $500 Moving Through Senate

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- A bill designed to soften penalties in Virginia for stealing smaller dollar items is moving through the state Senate. A Senate panel voted Monday for a bill to raise the felony threshold from $200 to $500. Virginia has kept its felony bar at $200 since 1980 and is tied with New Jersey for the lowest in the country.
