Chincoteague - New Bridge Within Budget

While driving over the old bridge to Chincoteague, one will notice the approximate 100 American Bridge workers, working at a steady pace to complete the new mainline bridge which connects Black Narrows to Maddox Blvd.

According to Tom Rakowski, construction manager for Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) “We are still within budget and the final completion date of November 2009 is still within range. Opening of the mainline should take place in mid-April of 2009.” In the meantime, the workers continue to pour the deck on the girders, according to VDOT’s Engineering Consultant from Jacobs Engineering Bruce Garber. They will finish driving the pilings on the mainline and then start driving pilings on the Marsh Island connector bridge. The bascule-span, a moveable see-saw like bridge, will have girder and steel-work installed in December. The bascule-span control house construction will start in late December. “The next major traffic event will be the imposition of a one-lane detour road at the Black Narrows abutment...in early January 2009,” continued Garber. “The traffic will still be controlled by flagmen when construction during construction, but during non-construction hours traffic lights will control the flow of traffic onto the island.” Rakowski said the stoplight, which will give precedence to those leaving the island, will remain until mid-April when the mainline opens to traffic.

VDOT Action before a Winter Storm

The Virginia Department of Transportation is getting ready for winter weather. Before snow or ice has a chance to reach pavement this season, VDOT will apply salt, chemicals and a liquid brine solution to roads up to 48 hours in advance of storms. The goal is to treat roads before motorists can be impacted by the weather. VDOT has budgeted $75.8 million for snow removal this winter. That's down from $80.6 million last year and $82.6 million for the previous winter.

Officials say a snow event that affects each of VDOT's districts costs $10 million a day. The agency's top priority in a storm is clearing the interstate first, then primary roads and secondary roads, and lastly subdivision streets. State emergency department officials say Virginia is overdue for a major statewide winter storm, and citizens should get ready now for the upcoming snow and ice season. "It's been eight years since we've had a big winter storm, which is a long time even by Virginia standards," said Michael Cline, state coordinator for the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. "It's critical that every family get ready for winter dangers such as power outages and slippery roads."
